Designs
The designs on Kilims express everyday nomadic life: Talismans against demons,
good -luck charms as well as symbols of plants, animals and material goods recur
frequently. Many of these motifs are of pre-Islamic origin. The harsh wilderness
in which man struggles and to which he brings his hopes, wishes and desires
are all expressed in a Kilim. Is is said of the Anatolian Kilim in particular
that they speak a mystic pictorial language. Because they are so rich in symbols
they offer an insight into a communal culture – however, each Kilim is
the creation of the individual sensibilty of the female weaver.
