For centuries, leaves, berries, bushes, roots, bark and minerals were the sources of brilliant colours. Even though artificial-organic recipes replaced these kinds of treatments over 100 years ago, they have never been completely abandoned. Natural colours in kilims retain their brilliance for decades. Moreover, the so-called "Abrash" effect is one of the most important and remarkable characteristics: a lightening and darkening of a colour tone within the woven fabric results in a particularly distinctive spectrum. Some colours in kilims become increasingly intense over time and this dynamic gives the impression that the colours are "dancing".
